Earwax (cerumen) naturally protects the ear canal by trapping dust and debris. Problems arise when it accumulates faster than the ear can clear it — which happens more often in warm, humid climates like Bali, especially for people who surf or swim regularly.
We commonly see patients with:
- Blocked ear after surfing or swimming — water drives wax deeper into the canal, causing sudden muffling
- Ear pressure after a flight — pressure changes compact wax, leaving a sensation of fullness that doesn't resolve
- Water trapped in one ear — often feels like the ear is underwater days after swimming
- Muffled hearing in one or both ears — gradual buildup that worsens over weeks
